Thriving Communities: Litter Removal Transforms Neighborhoods

by | Feb 5, 2025 | News, Sustainable Living

Clean, healthy, thriving communities start with something simple—removing litter. Litter influences everything from public health to community morale. At The Chad Livsey Project, we transform neglected spaces into clean environments in thriving communities.

But how can something as simple as picking up trash catalyze broader change? Let’s dive deeper into how this essential act can spark transformation and create lasting impacts on neighborhoods and the people who live there.

Engagement Builds Thriving Communities

It’s difficult to feel at home in a neighborhood that’s strewn with litter. Trash on streets sends a message of neglect and disinterest, discouraging residents from investing in their surroundings. Litter removal completely shifts this perception.

Clean neighborhoods produce a sense of ownership and pride. This sense of responsibility encourages further community engagement. It inspires residents to participate in projects like planting trees, starting community gardens, and organizing events that bring neighbors together.

At The Chad Livsey Project, we’ve witnessed firsthand how litter removal fosters this sense of pride. During our recent cleanups in Summerhill, volunteers not only picked up trash but also started conversations about other improvements they could make in the area. From painting murals to planting flowers, the ideas started flowing—and it all began with the simple act of cleaning up streets.

Craig Galanos, a passionate community leader from the Atlanta Beautification Committee, improves public spaces by removing graffiti. This mission aligns closely with litter removal, as both contribute to the perception of a neglected neighborhood. Craig believes a clean and graffiti-free environment promotes respect for shared spaces, making it less likely for people to litter or vandalize property.

After collaborating with The Chad Livsey Project during a community cleanup, Craig organized a graffiti removal initiative in a heavily tagged area. Within weeks, residents began noticing a decrease in new graffiti and litter. Inspired by his efforts, local businesses joined in by repainting their storefronts and installing planters, further enhancing the neighborhood’s appeal.

Craig’s work proves that small actions, like removing litter or graffiti, can transform how people view and interact with their community—leading to long-term, sustainable change.

Litter Removal Improves Public Health and Safety

Litter isn’t just unsightly—it’s dangerous. Piles of trash attract rodents and pests, which carry diseases. Broken glass and sharp objects can create hazards for children playing outside, while clogged storm drains from accumulated trash contribute to flooding, further endangering the community.

Did You Know?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), litter releases harmful chemicals as it breaks down, contaminating the soil and water. Discarded plastic releases forever chemicals into the community. Removing litter isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about protecting the health of both people and the planet.

A cleaner environment is a safer environment. By organizing litter removal efforts, we help eliminate these risks, creating a healthier space for everyone. This is particularly important in underserved neighborhoods, where access to healthcare and other resources may already be limited.

Thriving Communities and Property Values

Litter has a direct impact on property values. A neighborhood with neglected areas attracts fewer potential homebuyers or renters. A clean and well-maintained environment signals a  community is cared for, and makes it more appealing to residents.

Businesses are more likely to invest in areas that are clean and welcoming. By removing litter, we create a foundation for economic growth, attracting new stores, restaurants, and services that benefit the entire community.

Our Work Strengthens Local Ecosystems

Litter has a devastating impact on local ecosystems. Plastic bags, cigarette butts, and other trash can harm wildlife, who may mistake it for food. Chemicals from litter seep into the soil and water, disrupting delicate ecosystems and affecting plant and animal life.

We’ve helped restore local ecosystems, allowing native plants and animals to thrive. For example, during a cleanup near a local park, we removed over 600 pounds of trash, including plastic debris that blocked a small stream. Residents report seeing far more birds and other wildlife in the area.

By addressing litter, we’re not just improving conditions for humans—we’re creating a healthier planet for every living being.

We Foster a Sense of Community

Thriving communities result from people coming together to beautify their neighborhood. It’s powerful coming together with neighbors, rolling up sleeves, and working toward a common achievable goal.

Our cleanups often turn into social events, with volunteers sharing stories, laughs, and food. These connections help to break down barriers and build stronger, more connected communities.

Small Actions Create Long-Term Change

When we clean a neighborhood, residents are more likely to keep it that way. This can lead to broader initiatives like recycling programs, composting workshops, and other sustainability efforts.

At The Chad Livsey Project, we inspire these long-term changes by providing resources and support to residents. After a recent cleanup event we held a workshop on reducing household waste. Participants learned how to compost, reuse, and upcycle effectively. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees implementing these practices at home.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Change doesn’t happen overnight, but every small step adds up. By starting with litter removal, we create a foundation for lasting environmental and social progress.

When one neighborhood takes steps to clean up, it often inspires nearby communities to do the same. Clean streets can create a sense of competition in the best way possible, encouraging others to take pride in their surroundings.

In fact, after one of our cleanups in NPU-V, a neighboring community reached out to us for help organizing their own event. This ripple effect is exactly what we aim to achieve—spreading the message that everyone has the power to make a difference.
