French Broad River Cleanup – Asheville, NC
Event Description: French Broad River Cleanup Post-Hurricane Helene
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the French Broad River has been left with a significant amount of debris, disrupting the natural beauty of our beloved river and posing potential environmental risks. We need your help to restore this vital community resource! Join us for a cleanup event to support the Asheville community by removing debris and preventing harmful materials from leaching into the water.
Why it matters:
Removing debris from the river is crucial for the return of outdoor recreation and tourism to the area, as well as for protecting the environment. By coming together, we can help restore the river’s health and beauty for generations to come.
What to Bring & Wear:
- Essential Gear: Please wear long sleeves, long pants, work boots, rubber boots, and/or waders for protection.
- Safety Equipment: We will have gloves, safety glasses, and masks available, but feel free to bring your own for added comfort and protection.
- Tools: If you have loppers, saws, shovels, or ladders, please bring them to help dislodge and collect debris.
Volunteer Safety Reminder:
Due to the storm’s impact, debris may contain harmful contaminants such as mud, sludge, and dust. To protect yourself, please wear the following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Rubber boots and gloves to avoid direct contact with pollutants
- N95 masks or better to minimize dust inhalation
- Long sleeves and waterproof bandages to cover cuts
- Safety glasses to shield your eyes from debris
Event Perks:
At the end of the cleanup, we plan to provide lunch for all volunteers as a thank you for your hard work. Stay hydrated and bring any water, snacks, or personal food you may need. Additionally, United by Blue will be donating sustainable giveaways for volunteers as a token of appreciation!
Let’s come together to support our community, protect the environment, and leave the French Broad River cleaner and safer than before. Thank you for your dedication to making a positive impact!
We can’t wait to see you there.
